About Chesapeake Bay Critical Area

The Chesapeake Bay Critical Area is a 1,500-foot-wide managed zone extending inland from the mean high water line of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries throughout Maryland and parts of Virginia. Established under the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Protection Program, it is designed to preserve the environmental integrity of the Bay’s shoreline by regulating land use, minimizing pollution runoff, and protecting fish, wildlife, and native vegetation habitats. This critical area encompasses wetlands, tidal marshes, forested buffers, and underwater grasses that play crucial roles in supporting diverse aquatic and terrestrial species, including migratory birds, blue crabs, and striped bass. Visitors to the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area enjoy an array of outdoor activities such as birdwatching, boating, kayaking, fishing, and hiking along designated trails and waterfront parks. Notable landmarks include scenic coastal preserves, public fishing piers, and historical waterfront towns that reflect the rich cultural heritage tied to Chesapeake Bay’s maritime history. The area's management prioritizes sustainable recreational use alongside conservation efforts, ensuring that this vital estuarine ecosystem continues to thrive for future generations.
